The prescribed course of study in the elementary schools of Center School District is designed to provide those experiences, skills, and sources of information that will lead to the fullest mental, physical, social and aesthetic development of each student.
Reading materials and instruction are provided that emphasize the development of word attach skills and reading comprehension. A wide variety of materials are available to develop individual reading needs and interests. The program also stresses and develops specific reading skills for other subject matter areas: math, science, social science, etc.
The communication arts program provides for the development of writing skills. Students are provided experiences with a variety of writing styles and formats. To provide a base for writing, a comprehensive program of language mechanics, capitalization, punctuation and grammar is provided beginning in kindergarten. In addition, special attention is given to development of study skills, interpreting charts and graphs, finding information in the library and organizing reports.
Handwriting instruction begins with the knowledge of capital and small letters being developed at the kindergarten level. Beginning skills of letter formation are also started in kindergarten. Skills of manuscript writing are developed through grade two. Beginning in grade three, students are instructed in the use of cursive writing. Throughout the program, legibility of writing is emphasized.
The math program emphasizes the fundamental operation – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Also included in the program are fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, functions, metric system, measurement, geometry and algebra.
The science program stresses the student’s participation in experiments and observations. Students are encouraged to broaden their understanding of science through reading and research.
Through the primary grades, the social science program centers around a study of local communities. Beginning with fourth grade, study is expanded to include the state, the United States and other communities of the world. The total program emphasizes the relationships between people and the physical environment, as well as the interaction between people.
Specialists in art, music and physical education, work with all students on a regularly scheduled basis. They also work individually or in small groups with students who have exceptional talents or disabilities. Students in grades five and six may elect to participate in an instrumental music program.
