CHS Golf continues to attract new students . The Center High School golf team continues to grow. The students are learning new skills and learning to love the game. The 21-22 High School team was comprised of four scholars.
• Giovanni Giangrosso
• Cameron Hacker
• Sydney Pendelton-Mitchem
• Zack Westring
Sydney Pendelton-Mitchem shared a highlight of the season was having the chance to work with PGA professional Tiana Jones. Jones is the seventh African American woman to become a PGA professional. For Sydney, working with Jones was inspiring. “Getting the opportunity to learn and play alongside another African American female who is a golf professional was an experience that I can't explain in words. That was the first time that I had ever played with another African American Female and to have that opportunity was something I will always treasure,” said Pendelton-Mitchem.
Sydney Pendelton-Mitchem was the only student of color on the team and she also shared that there is a need for more inclusiveness and understanding on the student competition level. “This year golf was filled with a lot of fun, but it also came with a lot of obstacles. One thing I learned is that the three things that were working for me, were also the three things that unfortunately worked against me as well. Being African American, a female, and playing up against all-boys was challenging, I got laughed at and made fun of, but it taught me that there was an intimidation factor. I learned a lot and look forward to growing in the game of golf and playing for Center High School again next year,” said Pendelton-Mitchem.
Cameron Hacker, our only Golf Districts qualifier, missed making it to State this year by only two strokes.
