Each fall and spring, Yellowjacket Early Learning Center (YELC) observes Healthy Bee Month, an initiative coordinated by our Family Advocates to help students access essential healthcare services. In partnership with Swope Health’s KidsCARE mobile units and the Kansas City Health Department, YELC brings free dental exams, lead and hemoglobin screenings, physical exams, and immunizations directly to our school. These services help children establish medical and dental homes, meet Head Start health requirements, and receive the care they need to thrive.
By offering dental exams and screenings during school hours, YELC helps make healthcare more accessible for working families. Family Advocates also sit with students during these appointments to provide comfort and support. Physical exams are scheduled on Fridays to accommodate the requirement that a parent or guardian be present. For students without insurance, Head Start can help cover the cost of services.
Through these partnerships, YELC continues to prioritize student wellness and support families in overcoming barriers to essential healthcare.
