National School Walkout Day against school violence

The recent shootings in Nashville once again highlight the challenges of keeping our schools, staff members, and students safe in a world that is all too violent. A national organization called Students Demand Action organized a National School Walkout Day today to give national visibility to student concerns about school violence. A group of Center High School students expressed an interest in participating in this event and approached high school Principal, Mr. Wiegers, about options. Their goal was to make a powerful statement to the community and to our legislators, while ensuring that our students stay safe. Working together, the students proposed a plan to do a walkout to the football stadium on campus. There they observed a moment of silence, listened to comments from student leaders, signed a banner, and did individual interviews on HiveTV expressing their opinions HiveTV will create a recording of the event that will be sent to area legislators and community leaders to let them know how students and CHS feel about school violence.

We appreciate and respect our students for wanting to be constructively involved in this cause. We are grateful for the opportunity to work in solidarity with them today.
